Every keeper of snakes and large predatory lizards has asked the question at some point.
Frozen... or live?
Like most things in this wonderfully addictive hobby called herpetoculture, the answer isn't nearly as straightforward as people would like. In fact, it usually leads to another question entirely.
Before we get there, however, it's worth clearing up one common misconception.
In the UK, feeding a live vertebrate prey item is not automatically illegal. What the law does prohibit is causing unnecessary suffering and, in practice, purchasing a vertebrate animal specifically to be used as live food is heavily restricted. As a result, frozen-thawed prey has become the accepted standard for the vast majority of captive reptiles.
But legal doesn't necessarily mean biological.
To understand why frozen prey works so well...
...we first need to look at what reptiles actually eat in the wild.
Wild Food
Take the humble corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus).
Across its natural range, this opportunistic predator feeds on rodents, birds, eggs, lizards, amphibians, bats and, occasionally, even other snakes. There are also anecdotal reports of cannibalism.
Notice something?
Nowhere in that list does evolution specify:
"Only if it's still moving."
Freshly dead prey is still prey.
A recently killed mouse smells exactly like a living one. If a corn snake is cruising through woodland after dark and its tongue picks up the scent trail of a rodent that has only just died—perhaps dropped by another predator or killed during severe weather—it has little reason to ignore such an easy opportunity.
In fact, quite the opposite.
Reptiles are masters of energy conservation. Every strike, every constriction and every pursuit carries a cost. A meal that doesn't fight back, scratch, bite or require energy to subdue is, from an evolutionary perspective, something of a jackpot.
The Welfare Debate
It's a question that comes up time and time again.
Is feeding frozen-thawed prey more ethical?
The short answer?
Yes.
But not simply for the prey item.
For the predator too.
While working for my previous employer, I established a walk-in reptile clinic where customers could bring their animals for health checks, husbandry advice and, where appropriate, referral to an experienced exotic veterinarian.
Unfortunately, some of the injuries we saw were entirely preventable.
Snakes arrived with bite wounds running down the spine, deep scratches across the face, damaged eyes and missing scales. On one particularly unpleasant occasion, a snake was presented with most of its lower jaw torn away.
Every one of those injuries had the same origin.
A live feeder rodent had been placed into the enclosure...
...and the snake had been left to deal with it.
Now imagine the situation from the rodent's perspective.
You've been dropped into a small, enclosed space that smells overwhelmingly of a predator your species has spent millions of years evolving to avoid. There is nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. Every instinct is screaming at you to survive.
A mouse doesn't simply wait to become dinner.
It scratches.
It bites.
It fights with everything it has.
Now imagine the predator's perspective.
A Royal Python detects movement, heat and scent. It strikes...
...and misses.
Or perhaps it catches the rodent by the hindquarters rather than the head.
Suddenly, what should have been a meal becomes a fight.
A frightened rodent turns, bites repeatedly and clings on with remarkable determination. In a confined enclosure, the snake has no opportunity to disengage. It simply absorbs the damage until one animal eventually wins.
Everybody loses.
Frozen-thawed prey removes that conflict entirely.
"But Frozen Doesn't Have the Same Nutrition"
It's a statement repeated so often across reptile forums that you'd be forgiven for thinking freezers possess magical nutritional black holes.
They don't.
Freezing a prey item does not suddenly strip away its proteins, fats, calcium or other essential nutrients. When frozen, stored and thawed correctly, a whole prey item remains a nutritionally complete food source for the vast majority of captive reptiles.
The important words there are:
Stored correctly.
A poor-quality frozen rodent isn't poor because it was frozen.
It's poor because something happened after it was frozen.
Freezer burn.
Repeated thawing and refreezing.
Excessive storage time.
Poor hygiene.
These are the factors that affect quality—not the freezing process itself.
That's why sourcing frozen prey from reputable suppliers, storing it at a consistent temperature and thawing it correctly are just as important as choosing the right prey size in the first place.
Good nutrition isn't simply about what you feed.
It's about how you look after it before it reaches your reptile.
Choices, Choices
The rodents and birds we feed our reptiles should be held to exactly the same standard as any other food entering our own homes.
Quality matters.
Healthy breeding colonies.
Good biosecurity.
Appropriate quarantine.
Traceability.
Correct storage.
These are all things you should be able to say about every prey item you feed.
Why?
Because poor-quality feeder rodents don't just represent poor nutrition—they can introduce disease, compromise food safety and undermine everything else you've worked so hard to get right.
The reptile industry has seen first-hand what happens when those standards fail. In recent years, a major recall of frozen rodents following contamination highlighted just how important robust breeding, hygiene, quarantine and storage procedures really are. The consequences extended far beyond the recall itself, with shortages affecting reptile keepers across the country.
It served as a timely reminder that frozen prey is only as good as the standards behind it.
Choosing a reputable supplier isn't simply about convenience.
It's about confidence.
Confidence that your reptile's next meal has come from healthy breeding stock, been stored correctly and has remained traceable throughout the entire process.
Because good husbandry doesn't stop when the prey enters the freezer...
It starts long before that.
The Behaviour of Frozen Food
It sounds like a strange question.
How can frozen food possibly influence the behaviour of a reptile?
I've lost count of the number of times I've heard someone say:
"My snake won't eat frozen food."
Perhaps.
But here's another possibility.
Has your snake refused frozen food...
...or has it refused how the frozen food was presented?
For a snake, feeding isn't simply about recognising a mouse.
It's about recognising an opportunity.
Every species—and indeed every individual—relies on a combination of sensory cues that trigger a feeding response.
Scent.
Heat.
Movement.
Time of day.
Season.
Environmental conditions.
Even previous experience.
Some snakes require only one or two of those cues before they'll strike.
Others seem determined to negotiate a written contract first.
I've joked before that a corn snake would happily eat a ratsicle if you offered it one.
Royal pythons, on the other hand...
Well...
I've known individuals that appeared willing to eat only if the prey was the correct colour, presented at exactly the right temperature, during the right part of the day and, for all I know, while the moon was waxing and somebody was quietly humming in the background.
At the same time, I've known rat snakes that refused rats, snail-eating snakes that would ignore anything without a shell and eight-foot boa constrictors perfectly content living on extra-large mice because that's what they had always recognised as food.
The lesson isn't that frozen food doesn't work.
It's that reptiles don't read care sheets.
Species tells us what an animal has evolved to do.
The individual tells us how that particular animal chooses to do it.
Species is your guide.
The individual is your teacher.
Live Feeding...
Which brings us neatly to live prey.
There are occasions where live feeding becomes the only realistic option. Rehabilitation cases. Newly rescued animals. Individuals recovering from neglect. The occasional hatchling that steadfastly refuses every other method you've tried.
I'll happily raise my hand and admit it.
I've done it.
I suspect most experienced keepers have at one time or another.
The important word, however, is needed.
Live feeding is a husbandry tool, not a husbandry philosophy.
When every reasonable alternative has been exhausted and the welfare of the predator depends upon it, live prey may be justified. But it should never become the first response to a snake refusing a meal, nor should it be considered routine simply because "that's what snakes eat in the wild."
Captivity gives us opportunities that nature does not.
We can provide complete nutrition while dramatically reducing the risk of injury and unnecessary suffering for both predator and prey.
That's why frozen-thawed prey has become the standard.
Not because it's easier for us.
Because, in the overwhelming majority of cases...
It's better for them.
The Bigger Picture
Frozen-thawed prey isn't simply about convenience.
It's about consistency.
It's about providing complete nutrition while reducing unnecessary risk for both predator and prey. It's about choosing quality feeder animals, storing them correctly and understanding that good husbandry begins long before the prey reaches the feeding tongs.
Most importantly, it's about making informed decisions.
There will always be exceptional cases where live feeding becomes necessary. Rehabilitation. Medical concerns. The occasional stubborn individual that simply refuses every other option. Good husbandry has always allowed room for exceptions.
But exceptions should never become the rule.
Because captivity gives us something the wild never can.
Choice.
We can choose to reduce suffering.
We can choose to reduce risk.
We can choose to give our animals every opportunity to thrive.
And, in my opinion...
That's exactly what responsible herpetoculture should look like.
