Half a Billion Years of Patience

What one remarkable predator taught me about the art of doing almost nothing.

There is a scorpion sitting on the shelf in my lounge.

He isn't particularly interested in me. He spends most of his time rearranging substrate, sitting under a piece of cork bark and glaring at passing crickets as though they've personally offended him.

To most people, he'd probably look like an unusual pet.

To me...

He's a survivor.

Long before the dinosaurs dominated the Earth, before the first bird took to the skies or the first flower bloomed, the ancestors of modern scorpions were already stalking prey. Their evolutionary history stretches back around 450 million years, making them one of the oldest successful groups of terrestrial predators still alive today.

The little Israeli Gold Claw Scorpion (Scorpio maurus palmatus) living in my Perspex palace is carrying around almost half a billion years of evolutionary refinement.

Sometimes I don't feel I do him justice.

His earliest ancestors were aquatic hunters, prowling ancient rivers and shallow seas where they preyed upon fish, primitive arthropods and anything unfortunate enough to fit between their enormous claws. As life slowly began to colonise the land, their descendants came with it. Some of the earliest terrestrial scorpions were among the first predators to explore this strange new world, hunting insects, spiders and other pioneering invertebrates hundreds of millions of years before mammals had even begun to dream of existing.

That's quite a lineage for something most visitors mistake for "that scary thing in the tank."

Built Like a Tank

At first glance, scorpions don't appear particularly complicated.

Eight legs.

Two oversized claws.

A tail with a sting on the end.

Job done.

Look a little closer, however, and they reveal themselves to be extraordinary pieces of evolutionary engineering. Every part of a scorpion has been refined over hundreds of millions of years to help it survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth.

The front half of the body is protected by a solid armoured shield, while the abdomen is divided into flexible segments that allow the animal to twist, climb and manoeuvre with surprising agility. Those famous pincers—or pedipalps—aren't simply weapons. They're used to investigate the world, capture prey and, in many species, even judge whether something is worth stinging in the first place.

The sting itself often steals all the attention, but it usually isn't the scorpion's first choice. Many larger species rely almost entirely on the strength of their claws, reserving venom for prey that's difficult to subdue or when they genuinely feel threatened. Like many predators, venom is a valuable resource and wasting it unnecessarily would make little evolutionary sense.

Scorpions are also rather unusual diners.

Unlike us, they don't chew their food. Once prey has been subdued, powerful mouthparts tear it into manageable pieces before digestive enzymes begin breaking it down outside the body. The resulting nutrient-rich liquid is then sucked into the digestive system.

In other words...

Scorpions don't really eat their dinner.

They drink it.

Built to Sense the World

One of the biggest surprises for many people is that scorpions don't rely particularly heavily on eyesight.

Most species possess several simple eyes, enough to distinguish light, darkness and movement, but their real understanding of the world comes through touch and vibration.

Fine sensory hairs called trichobothria cover the claws and body, detecting the slightest movement of air or the tiniest vibration passing through the ground. A walking cricket, a curious lizard or an approaching predator all leave invisible clues long before they're close enough to be seen.

Then there are the pectines.

These remarkable comb-like organs, found beneath the body, are unique to scorpions. As they walk, the pectines constantly sweep across the ground, sampling both texture and chemistry. They help locate prey, identify potential mates and build a surprisingly detailed picture of the world beneath the scorpion's feet.

It's rather like reading the landscape with your fingertips...

...while simultaneously tasting it.

Not bad for an animal many people assume spends all day sitting under a rock.

Ancient Doesn't Mean Primitive

One of the things that fascinates me most about scorpions is that they've changed remarkably little over hundreds of millions of years.

That isn't because evolution forgot about them.

It's because evolution didn't need to.

When people hear the phrase "living fossil", they often imagine an animal that's somehow been left behind while everything else evolved around it. The reality is almost the opposite. Scorpions haven't stood still because they couldn't change.

They've stood still because they were already exceptionally good at being scorpions.

If something works...

Natural selection has very little incentive to redesign it.

That's a remarkable thought.

The little predator sitting under a piece of cork bark in my lounge is following many of the same rules that his ancestors followed before the first dinosaurs ever appeared.

I find that astonishing.

Patience Perfected

One of the biggest misconceptions about scorpions is that they're constantly looking for something to sting.

They aren't.

In reality, most species are remarkably economical animals. Every movement costs energy, so they simply don't waste it. Rather than wandering around looking for trouble, many scorpions spend hours—sometimes days—sitting perfectly still, waiting for the world to come to them.

They're ambush predators.

Their world isn't built around speed.

It's built around patience.

A passing cricket doesn't just appear out of nowhere. Long before the scorpion ever sees it, tiny sensory hairs covering its body have already detected the slightest movement of air. Minute vibrations travelling through the ground tell it something is approaching, while remarkable comb-like organs called pectines sweep the substrate beneath its feet, building a picture of the world that we can barely imagine.

By the time we notice the prey...

The scorpion has been tracking it for several seconds.

Then everything changes.

The strike itself is astonishingly fast. Powerful pedipalps snap shut around the prey, pinning it almost instantly. Contrary to popular belief, the sting isn't always used. Small or easily subdued prey is often dispatched with nothing more than the claws. Venom is expensive to produce, and evolution tends not to waste expensive resources.

Only when prey is particularly large, active or capable of fighting back does the sting become the weapon of choice.

Once captured, however, the process slows down again.

Scorpions don't chew their food in the way mammals do. Instead, they begin digesting it before it ever reaches the stomach. Digestive enzymes are poured over the prey, gradually breaking down the soft tissues into a nutrient-rich liquid that can be pumped into the digestive system. Over the next few hours, the unfortunate victim is reduced to little more than an empty shell.

It isn't glamorous.

It isn't quick.

But it is astonishingly efficient.

And perhaps that's what fascinates me most.

Almost everything about a scorpion is built around conserving energy until the exact moment it's needed. They don't waste movement, they don't waste venom and they certainly don't waste opportunity.

For an animal whose ancestors were hunting hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs appeared...

...that's clearly a strategy that works.

Why Keep One?

And the answer becomes...

Because appreciating an animal doesn't require interaction.

Some animals ask to be handled.

Some ask to be watched.

Scorpions belong firmly in the second category.

Keeping one has changed the way I look at predators. They're not aggressive. They're not constantly looking for something to sting. They're remarkably economical animals, perfectly happy to be left alone until the world gives them a reason to react.

The more time I've spent with mine, the more I've realised that I'm not really keeping a pet.

I'm keeping a lesson in patience.
